Remarks by H.E. Song Yumin at the Opening Ceremony of the New Diplomatic Premises of the Chinese Embassy
2018/11/01

It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to this opening ceremony of the new diplomatic premises of the Chinese Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago. Ever since I came and took my office here in Port of Spain, many friends came to me with topics on the new Chinese Embassy complex. They showed their genuine care for us on the project. I am since convinced that such an opening ceremony is expected and fitting.

Indeed, this is an event of significance in the development of China-Trinidad and Tobago relationship, a relationship dated back two centuries when the first Chinese immigrants arrived in Trinidad in 1806. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 44 years ago, the relations between China and Trinidad and Tobago have made remarkable headway. Chinese President H.E. Xi Jinping's successful state visit to Trinidad and Tobago in 2013 unveiled a new era of enhanced political mutual trust and deepened exchanges and cooperation in various fields between our two countries. In May this year, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Dr. the Honorable Keith Rowley's official visit to China gave momentum to the already vibrant relations between the two countries. China and Trinidad and Tobago joined hands in building a Silk Road Economic Belt and a 21st Century Maritime Silk Road on the basis of mutual consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits. Such cooperation is comprehensive, it includes all sectors. Our cultural exchanges and people-to-people links have never been stronger.

The embassy's new premises would befit the vibrant development of our bilateral relations. It becomes the largest Chinese Embassy in terms of physical size in English-speaking Caribbean region. I regard it as a fresh fruit of China-Trinidad and Tobago friendship and partnership. The building itself is significant. It is designed and constructed in China's Hui-style architecture, a significant school developed as early as in the Song Dynasty some one thousand years back. The white walls, dark tiles, corbie-gables and decorations with brick artworks are the striking features. I believe it contributes to the expansion of the architecture diversity in Port of Spain and it bears symbolic significance of cultural exchanges. Besides, efforts were made to embrace the Green Development Concept and technology. For example, solar energy for hot water, energy-saving lighting, kitchen fume purification device are used.

The construction of the new Embassy premises was launched in 2014. Throughout the whole course, we have received full support and sincere assistance from the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, from Port of Spain Corporation and other relevant government departments of Trinidad and Tobago as well as from local Chinese Community. I owe my heartfelt gratitude to you. I thank all those who have cared for and supported us on the project.

I believe the opening of this new embassy premises is a new starting point for an even closer and stronger China-Trinidad and Tobago relationship. With hands joined together, we work for the benefit of our peoples, together we contribute to the building of a community of shared future. Long may China-Trinidad and Tobago friendly relationship flourish.

Thank you, Ladies and Gentlemen, May you all enjoy the rest part of the evening.
