Presidents of all Chinese Associations

Members of the Chinese Community

Distinguished Guests, Friends, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good Afternoon.

Welcome to this celebration of Chinese Lunar New Year. The coming new year is the year of Roster in Chinese Zodiac, which will begin in 3 days. On this occasion, I'd like to extend to you on behalf of the Chinese embassy season's greetings and best wishes. May the year of Rooster bring prosperity good health, joy and happiness to you all throughout the year.

When looking forward to the new year, I can't help to reflect on the extraordinary progress China achieved over the year of 2016. We made a good start in carrying out the 13th Five-year Plan. While transforming economic structure, overcoming difficulties and challenges, we were able to maintain stable economic growth at the rate of 6.7%. Last September, China hosted the 11th G20 Summit in the beautiful city of Hangzhou and contributed Chinese wisdom and solutions to the world economy. Besides, the "Belt and Road" Initiative was successfully pushed forward, and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank officially started operation. We adhered to the peaceful development while resolutely safeguarding the territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests of China.

2016 also saw the steady development on the bilateral relationship between our two countries. Together with CELAC members including Trinidad and Tobago, China established a platform to enhance mutual understanding and strengthen friendship. In January 2016, during the success visit of H.E. Chen Changzhi, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, leaders from our two countries reached consensus on enhancing bilateral relationship. Meanwhile, bilateral political mutual trust was strengthened and the friendship between our two peoples further enhanced.

2016 was also a great year for the Chinese Community in Trinidad and Tobago. In the year, the community shared mutual support, maintained unity and made great achievements. In October, vice minister Guo Jun from the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council came to attend the celebration of 210th anniversary of Chinese Arrival in Trinidad and Tobago and unveiled the Chinese Mutual Support Center. The Chinese companies made positive contributions to bilateral trade and economic cooperation. The Chinese medical teams successfully finished their mission. The Confucius Institute continued to foster young talents for the country.

In the year of 2017, the Chinese Communist Party will convene its 19th national congress, an occasion to renew our commitment to the comprehensive building of a moderately prosperous society, governing the country according to law, and applying strictness in governing the party. This year, as the second China's Policy Paper on Latin America and the Caribbean implemented, the bilateral relationship between our two countries will enjoy a new development opportunity.

As Chinese President Xi Jinping mentioned in his New Year's speech, no fruit will be reaped without hard work. We will be rewarded with achievements only after tireless endeavors. In the New Year, let's join hands in striving for a better future, and further development of our bilateral relations. Let's continue to enhance the mutual understanding and friendship between our two peoples.

Taking this opportunity, I'd like to reassure you of the support of the Chinese embassy, be it the consular assistance or other services, And i thank you for your valuable support to the Chinese Embassy.

Finally, i wish you good luck and all the best for the new year, and enjoy the rest part of the celebration. Thank you.
